The free FrogSpotter mobile apps and the FrogWatch SA website are the powerhouse behind FrogWatch SA. They are designed to make it easy and fun to learn about South Australia’s frogs and to collect essential knowledge about them. By taking part in frog surveys, you can help us better understand the condition of the environments frogs are dependent on in South Australia.
You don’t have to be an expert to contribute. People of all ages, knowledge and background can take part. There are many ways to participate: as a FrogSpotter, as a group coordinator, or as a frog call identifier. We need information at all times of the year and across all of South Australia.
The best time to count frogs is when they are breeding. Although this is in winter and spring for most types of frogs, some frogs breed in summer and most desert frogs will breed only after a big rain, which can occur at any time of the year. The exact timing that is best for a species to breed can change from year to year and region to region because it is influenced by many environmental conditions such as temperature and rainfall. So we encourage you to get out FrogSpotting as often as possible and to cover as many parts of the state as you can.
If you do not have a GPS enabled smartphone or tablet (for example, wi-fi only iPads are not GPS enabled) you can still submit recordings via this website. You can download a copy of the offline datasheet here.
Help us collect valuable data on the condition of the environments frogs are dependent on in South Australia! Collect audio, photos and habitat info for each survey you conduct. Learn about frogs within SA, including audio examples of their calls.

Registering with FrogWatch SA
To submit surveys and use some of the more advanced features of this website and the FrogSpotter app you'll need to register (you can do this either through the app or the website) and log in. When you register you should get sent an email within a few minutes to confirm your details. If this doesn't happen you won't be able to login or submit surveys, so here are a few things to check:
- Did you enter your email address correctly?
- Was the confirmation email sent to your Spam or Junk Mail folder?
If you are sure your details are correct and the email has not arrived (unfortunately this sometimes happens with hotmail or gmail accounts), please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org using your selected email account and let us know your username so that we can manually confirm your details.
FrogSpotter is available free of charge on the Apple app store for iPhones and iPads.
Note: WiFi-only iPad models (ones without cellular network capability) do NOT have a built-in GPS and are not suitable for use with the FrogSpotter app unless you have an added GPS receiver.
FrogSpotter is also available free of charge for Android devices.
UNFORTUNATELY, THE ANDROID VERSION OF FROGSPOTTER IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE ON THE GOOGLE PLAY STORE. PLEASE BEAR WITH US WHILE WE WORK TO GET IT BACK ONLINE.
In the meantime, you can download it to your phone and manually install it using this APK file on our website. Depending on the version of Android on your phone, you will have to give permission to install the APK file when you open it, or go into your phone's security settings and enable installation of files from unknown sources (see this link for information about this process).
Please be assured that the file we have made available is perfectly safe to use and is, in fact, the same version that we previously had available on the Play Store.
